Anyone who still thinks digital marketing only consists of social media probably could not be more wrong?
People who are not familiar with digital marketing indeed often makes this wrong assumption. Social media is an important part of it, but it’s more than just looking for a fun idea and posting that on Facebook. It’s important as digital marketeer that you have some technical knowledge and can think strategically and analytically. A cool idea will never reach the expected results without defining your target audience and important KPI’s.
Besides, my tasks are a lot more varied than just social media. Since Code d’Or is a web agency in first place, I come into contact with event tracking, URL-mapping, SEO,… for our web projects. A variety of advertising such as SEA and consultancy for our marketing projects are also things I encounter weekly. Additionally copywriting is a big part of our job – think about a catchy one-liner to accompany that fun Facebook post or writing a case for our own website.
And I can get frustrated when a campaign isn’t running like I want it to. Achieving good results is not always as easy and optimizing can’t be done endlessly. Sometimes a campaign is not functioning well and you can’t seem to find out why. That’s the hard part about online marketing: it’s not exact science.
Which characteristics does a good all-round marketeer need to make it in this world?
A good all-round marketeer ideally has a very extensive package of skills. To start you need to have a good dose of creativity, an analytical mindset and a strategic insight in combination with great communicational skills. On top of that a good all-round marketeer needs to take the time to plan out, set up and follow up his or her campaigns. For this you need to be result focused, without losing sight of the quality of your work.
You also need to be able to stand your ground, so you can present your story to clients and colleagues. More traditional clients are still skeptical about the digital world and choose to put all of their eggs in the print basket. In this case you need to be able to convince them of your value.
