Heritage with a star
The list of patrimonies has become almost inexhaustible with the rich background of Flemish customs and practices. Amongst them there are a couple of mavericks which were added to the official inventory Flanders of the Immaterial Cultural Heritage, recognisable on the website with the star icon. This initiative by the Flemish government is to purposely take action to transmit this to others and inspire them to participate as well.
You can also have your efforts recorded in the list of inspirational tips through the website. You can add a proposal for a specific action to take care of a long-term conservation of a certain patrimony.
Giving a future to our heritage means practicing said heritage. Although eating fries has been maintained in our culture well to this day, another thing can be said for bell ringing. Under the ‘Inspiration’ tab on the website you can find numerous tips, methodologies, and reading material about how we can conserve these old-time habits.
Some products made in a traditional way are not being used anymore for their intended use like they used to. Take the clog for instance: these days you can find a lot more comfortable shoes on the market, but that doesn’t mean that relaunching these wooden shoes can’t be a fun and possibly hilarious activity. For example, in Oelegem every year a true Clograce is held through the village streets! It’s through activities like these that our heritage revives.
